Modifying the Seamless Patterns in Adobe Illustrator

Instruction Manual

I. REPOSITIONING THE APPLIED PATTERN FILL

Note: Hold­ing down the "~" key al­lows you to modi­fy the pat­tern only, without the shape that it is ap­plied to.

  1. Choose the Selection tool from the Tools panel. (Figure 1.1)
  2. With the Selection tool activated, click on the object to which the pattern is applied in order to select it. (Figure 1.2)
  3. While holding the “~” key, click and drag the pattern to reposition it. Release.

Note: Re­pos­i­tion­ing the pat­tern could also be achieved by us­ing the four key­board ar­rows while hold­ing the “~” key.

II. RESCALING THE APPLIED PATTERN FILL

Note: Hold­ing down the "~" key al­lows you to modi­fy the pat­tern only, without the shape that it is ap­plied to.

  1. Choose the Selection tool from the Tools panel. (Figure 1.1)
  2. With the Selection tool activated, click on the object to which the pattern is applied in order to select it. (Figure 1.2)
  3. Choose the Scale tool from the Tools panel. (Figure 2.1)
  4. While holding the “~” key, click on the object with the Scale tool and drag sideways to rescale the pattern. Hold the Shift key for uniform scaling. Release. (Figure 2.2)

III. ROTATING THE APPLIED PATTERN FILL

  1. Choose the Selection tool from the Tools panel. (Figure 1.1)
  2. With the Selection tool activated, click on the object to which the pattern is applied in order to select it. (Figure 1.2)
  3. Choose the Rotate tool from the Tools panel. (Figure 3.1)
  4. While holding the “~” key, click on the object with the Rotate tool and drag sideways to rotate the pattern. Hold the Shift key to rotate in 45-degree steps. Release. (Figure 3.2)

IV. REPOSITION, SCALE, ROTATE OR REFLECT BY ENTERING SPECIFIC VALUES

  1. Choose the Selection tool from the Tools panel. (Figure 1.1)
  2. With the Selection tool activated, click on the object to which the pattern is applied in order to select it. (Figure 1.2)
  3. Double click the desired tool from the Tools panel. (Figure 4.1)
  4. The tool's dialog box pops up. Enter the chosen values. (Figure 4.2)
  5. Make sure "Transform Patterns" is checked and "Transform Objects" is unchecked. (Figure 4.3)
  6. Check the "Preview" box to see the changes while you make them. (Figure 4.4)
  7. Click "OK" to apply the changes.

Note: The res­ult­ing mod­i­fied pat­tern will auto­mat­ic­ally be ap­plied as a fill to all new shapes you cre­ate af­ter­wards. To go back to its ori­gin­al ver­sion, re­apply it on the de­sired ob­ject from the Swatches pan­el.

Please note that the Illustrator files in our collections are compatible with the CC and CS6 versions of Adobe Illustrator and will not work with previous ones.
