Applying the Seamless Patterns in Adobe Photoshop

I. APPLYING A PATTERN TO A VECTOR SHAPE OBJECT

  1. Select the Shape tool (Figure 1.1) and create a shape (Figure 1.2).
  2. With the Shape tool active, go to the Shape options panel and click on the Fill box to select the shape fill type. (Figure 1.3)
  3. Click on the "Pattern" fill type. (Figure 1.4)
  4. Select a pattern from the pattern library (Figure 1.5) and adjust its scale (Figure 1.6).

The pat­tern is now ap­plied to your ob­ject. (Fig­ure 1.7)

Note: You can change the se­lec­ted pat­tern fill or re­ad­just the scale by click­ing on the FILL box in the Shape Op­tions pan­el with the Shape tool act­ive.

II. APPLYING A PATTERN VIA THE PAINT BUCKET TOOL

  1. Select the layer to apply the pattern onto, or create a new layer.
  2. Select the Paint Bucket tool. (Figure 3.1)
  3. From the Paint Bucket tool panel, select "Pattern" as a fill. (Figure 3.2)
  4. Choose a pattern from the Pattern Picker (Figure 3.3) by clicking on it (Figure 3.4).
  5. Click onto the canvas (with the Paint Bucket tool active). The chosen pattern is then applied to the layer that you are working on.

Note: Us­ing the Paint Buck­et tool does not give you the op­tion to modi­fy the pat­tern fill after ap­plic­a­tion.

III. CREATING A NEW PATTERN LAYER

  1. Create a new pattern layer from: Layer > New Fill Layer > Pattern....
  2. Name your layer from the New Layer pop-up dialog box and click "OK". (Figure 3.1)
  3. In the Pattern fill pop-up option box that appears, browse the desired pattern from the pattern library, select the scale and click "OK". (Figure 3.2)

Note: You can change the se­lec­ted pat­tern fill and re­ad­just its scale by double click­ing on the lay­er icon in the Lay­ers pan­el (in the right end of the work­space).

IV. ASSIGNING A "PATTERN OVERLAY" LAYER STYLE

  1. Create a new fill layer (Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color...) (or choose an existing fill layer).
  2. In the Layers panel (WINDOW > LAYERS), double click on the layer icon to set a layer style. (Figure 4.1)
  3. From the Layer Style pop-up menu, select Pattern Overlay. (Figure 4.2)
  4. From the Pattern Overlay settings (Figure 4.3) select the desired pattern (Figure 4.4) and click outside the Pattern picker to close it.
  5. Set the pattern scale, opacity and blend mode, and click "OK".

Note: You can change the se­lec­ted pat­tern fill and re­ad­just its set­tings by double click­ing on the lay­er "Ef­fects" icon in the Lay­ers pan­el, thus re­open­ing the same menu.
