Applying the Seamless Patterns in Adobe Illustrator

I. IMPORTING PATTERN SWATCHES AND COLORS INTO YOUR WORKING FILE

To im­port a pat­tern swatch:

  1. Open your working file.
  2. Go to the Swatches panel (WINDOW > SWATCHES).
  3. Go to the Swatches panel menu: Open swatch library > Other library (Figure 1.1).
  4. Browse the Illustrator file containing the desired pattern and click “Open”.
  5. A swatch library opens: click on the desired pattern swatch to import it. (Figure 1.2)

The se­lec­ted pat­tern swatch (Fig­ure 1.3) will be ad­ded along with its col­ors (Fig­ure 1.4) to the Swatches pan­el of your work­ing file.

The newly ad­ded pat­tern swatch is now ready to be ap­plied in your design.

Note: These steps give you the op­tion to also im­port col­or palettes. Click on the icon of the palette in the be­gin­ning of each row of col­or swatches to se­lect and add it in­to your file.

II. APPLYING A PATTERN SWATCH AS FILL TO A SHAPE

Now that you got the pat­tern swatch in­to your work­ing file, you may pro­ceed to as­sign it as a fill to any ob­ject you need:

  1. Choose the Select tool or the Direct selection tool. (Figure 2.1)
  2. Select the object you need to asign the pattern to by clicking on it while Select tool is active. The object’s active points will get visible after selection. (Figure 2.2)
  3. Make sure you work in FILL mode (upper left box active). You can toggle between FILL and STROKE mode by hitting the “X” key. (Figure 2.3)
  4. While your object is selected click on the desired pattern swatch in your Swatches palette. (Figure 2.4)

The se­lec­ted pat­tern swatch is now ap­plied to the ob­ject. (Fig­ure 2.5)

Please note that the Illustrator files in our collections are compatible with the CC and CS6 versions of Adobe Illustrator and will not work with previous ones.
