Another Chinese taotie motif, recreated from a cloisonne enamel censer from the Qianlong period.
Taotie ("the glutton"), one of "the four monsters" in Chinese mythology, is a beast with a head but no body, possessing the power to devour absolutely anything. Its symbolic meaning varies from merely a monster creature, to a warning for the greedy ones, to even a protective figure.
